| Contone Photorealistic Desktop DOD Ink Jet Processes
In contrast to continuous ink jet printers, this liquid ink jet
printing technology only generates an ink droplet if it is to be
ejected onto the substrate to form a dot, thus the terminology:
drop-on-demand (DOD), or impulse jet print. The printhead on most
desktop printers employs piezoelectric crystal technology to eject
the ink droplet. DOD printers can also have thermal printheads that
use the formation and collapse of a bubble due to heat to eject
droplets.

Colorant: liquid dye-based ink
Medium: very wide variety. Contone media are either RC based or
have a receptor coating. Uncoated paper can be used as well, but
results in a less brilliant image (Figure III).
Surface: matte to glossy, paper fibers hidden
Inscriptions: Epson Photo Paper (RC paper) has the words "EPSON
Photo Paper" in gray diagonal letters on the verso. Contribute

Image Quality: at 1440 dpi print resolution near photographic quality,
to the naked eye almost indistinguishable to photographic prints
(Figure I). Under magnification individual dots are sharp, but render
near continuous tone
Applications: desktop printing, graphic arts, advertising agencies
